Despite being directly influenced by the Atlantic Ocean, the climate of the region is more Mediterranean that European North Atlantic. Therefore, the winter is neither too harsh nor the summer too hot. This temperate climate means life outdoors is extremely pleasant.

Being on the same latitude as London, Portugal uses Greenwich Mean Time. As in Britain, the time changes in spring and autumn for Daylight Saving Time.
Electricity is supplied at 220 volts and the plugs follow the European system (with two pins). However, hotels can lend guests adaptors for English and American mobile telephone chargers; and there are always commutators from 220 v to 110 v.
Portugal uses the metric system of measurement. The following list shows the approximate British Imperial equivalents:

| 1 foot | 0,39 m / 12 inches |

Shops are normally open from 9 AM to 1 PM and from 3 PM to 7 PM. Shopping centres and supermarkets are usually open longer, roughly between 10 AM to 11 PM without a break for lunch. Public sector offices are open from 9:30 AM to 12:30 PM and from 14h00 to 17h00. Banks operate from 8:30 AM to 3 PM and do not close for lunch. Pharmacies are open for the same times as other shops although there are also permanent service pharmacies open at all hours and days of the week.
Portuguese is the official language of Portugal and is the third most spoken European language worldwide. This is due to it being the official language of the former Portuguese colonies (Angola, Mozambique, Cape Verde etc.) and Brazil. English is taught in schools as the main foreign language so a large proportion of the population has a good understanding of it.
Portugal is part of the single European currency and therefore uses the Euro as its currency. Banks offer normal currency exchange services and most establishments accept credit and debit cards. ATMs, known as Multibanco, are abundant and very easy to find.
The predominant religion is Roman Catholicism, although other places of worship are to be found as religious freedom is protected by the Portuguese Constitution.
